NEWS AND NOTES
Donald Baker’s homebred He’s the King made
his first start at Mountaineer Park a winning one when the High
Risen gelding went wire to wire to win by 12 ¼ lengths on June 8th.
He’s the King is trained by SCTOBA member Chuck Lloyd and
trained in South
Carolina at Shuler Stables.
Matt Rispoli became the latest winning
jockey to come from Franklin Smith’s
Elloree
Training
Center
when he guided Maggie Kimmitt’s Casi Cielo to a
3 length win on May
23rd at Pimlico. Rispoli had won 2 races at the most
recent Elloree Trials in March.
Casi Cielo is trained by Hamilton Smith.
Fenwick Farm and trainer Michelle Nihei
were on a streak in June when three Fenwick graduates won Maiden
Special Weight at Churchill Downs in a span of 14 days. All were
trained by Michelle Nihei. Nihei is a former exercise rider and
assistant for Todd Pletcher.
The SCTOBA summer meeting was held on June
13 at the Foothills Equestrian and
Nature
Center near Landrum, SC.
The meeting was highlighted by
a presentation by Dr. Bill Hay of Tryon Equine. He
highlighted many of the new techniques being used by
veterinarians and surgeons in the continuing battle to keep our
horses sound and productive. The next regularly scheduled SCTOBA
will be Dec. 12th in Elloree. The election of
officers and directors will take place at the December meeting.
