S.C. Bred Wins Claiming Crown Feature

The Sixth Annual Claiming Crown took place at Canterbury Park on Saturday, July 17th, featuring 6 events for thoroughbred racing’s blue-collar runners.  The $145,500 Jewel Stakes highlighted the event and produced the biggest upset of the day when a South Carolina bred Intelligent Male closed gamely to win by a neck at nearly 19 to 1.  Intelligent Male is a 4 year old bred in SC by Franklin G. Smith Sr.  He is by South Carolina stallion Ride The Storm out of the Grey Adorn mare Likearone.  Ride The Storm stands at the Elloree Training Center and is also owned by Franklin G Smith.

Intelligent Male had won his two previous starts at Mountaineer Park.  The grey gelding broke from the far outside in the 1⅛ mile event and outgunned the favorite Musique Toujours through the stretch.  Ridden by Eddie Martin Jr and trained by Wayne Catalano, Intelligent Male now holds a record of 5 wins, 6 seconds and 2 thirds from 19 starts and $190,259 in earnings. He ran the 1⅛ mile event over a fast track in 1:49.6.

The SCTOBA congratulates Franklin “Goree” Smith and the connections of Intelligent Male.
